I am Jim Smith and the artist behind “Feathered Inspirations”.  Since I began carving in 2005, after retiring as a Captain with the Brantford Fire Department, I started carving. First I took a course at a community college, but it wasn’t until I was introduced to two time World champion Glen Ladenberger that the passion took hold.

I have taken courses with other World champion carvers including Pat Godin, Larry Barth, Bruce Lepper and Floyd Schultz. It was Glen who said that learning what others do will help me develop my own style and I thank him for that advise.

As a carver, I want to produce art that is unique. My hope is that when someone sees my creations, they will see intended motion or that there something about to happen. If this happens you may see a story in the carving. Making wooden birds come to life is real art.

I have received numerous awards in juried shows that include:

  • Two Best in Show – the Canadian Woodcarving Championships, Hamilton, Ontario.
  • Best in Show – Niagra Woodcarving Championship
  • Best and two Second Best of Class – Canadian Wildfowl Championships, Kitchener, Ontario.
  • Best in Division and 3rd Best in Show Novice – Ward World Championships, Ocean City, Maryland.
  • Best in Division and Best in Show Intermediate – Ward World Championships, Ocean City, Maryland.
  • 3rd Best in Category – Ward World Championships, Ocean City, Maryland.

When I’m not carving I enjoy life with my wife, Laureen. Our daughter Jacinda and son Michael have grown into two wonderful adults. Jacinda and her husband Derek have blessed us with three wonderful grand children – Joshua, Lauren and Ethan.

Please stop by the blog often as I share my love for carving with you.
